PUALI‘AHU WORKSHOP SERIES
The Pualiʻahu Workshop Series is a hands-on educational experience led by Kumu Hulu Nui Rick San Nicolas, dedicated to perpetuating the sacred and ancient Hawaiian art of featherwork. Through this series, selected participants are taught to create ʻahu ʻula (feather cloaks) while gaining a deeper understanding of their cultural significance and the traditions they represent. Workshops are held throughout the year, and attendance is by application and invitation only to ensure each participant receives thoughtful guidance. The goal of the series is to preserve and pass down this cultural legacy to future generations.
Inside the Workshop
Each workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn the traditional process of creating an ʻahu ʻula from start to finish. Participants work in a small group setting, receiving personalized guidance and hands-on instruction every step of the way. No prior experience is necessary—just a willingness to learn and a deep respect for the cultural practice. While much of the time is spent in focused individual work, the experience also includes moments of reflection, shared meals, and connection with others who are equally committed to honoring and preserving this sacred tradition.
Workshop Commitment
The Pualiʻahu Workshop Series takes place over two required in-person sessions held on Oʻahu at the Hawai‘i Convention Center:
Part One: A 2-day workshop focused on foundational techniques and beginning your practice cape
Part Two: A 3-day workshop typically scheduled 5 to 6 weeks later, allowing time for independent work between sessions. At this workshop, you’ll turn in your completed practice cape and begin work on your full-sized ʻahu ʻula.
Both sessions are mandatory. From the first workshop date, participants also receive up to one year of ongoing virtual instruction and support from Kumu Rick San Nicolas. This extended mentorship provides guidance and encouragement throughout your journey toward completing your ʻahu ʻula with care and cultural intention.
How to Join
Participation is by application only. The same application is used for both general workshop consideration and scholarship opportunities. Selected applicants will be notified with next steps, including upcoming dates and workshop details. If you’re interested in joining a future workshop, you can submit your application
