Tahitian:
The rhythm of the pahu and the beating of the Tahitian
toere (toe-wed-day) always get the fingers tapping, the feet
moving and the hips start to sway! When you go to any
Polynesian performance, when the Tahitian performers come onto
stage, the excitement starts to build. You know your are
in for a treat! I have been able to find and work with a
Master Tahitian drum maker in Hawaii and now, I am able to
present to you quality toeres, toere sticks (ironwood
from Hawai`i), pahu, faatete (carved of coconut stump or PVC)
and pahu tupai. The toere are made of what woods are
available to me at the time. I will show the actual
picture (all sides) of the toere for sale along with
dimensions and sound. The sound recordings should depict
the tones as suggested. You may request a special type
of wood and if available, your request can be accommodated.
The price of the toere will be in line with the availability
and quality of the wood requested. Special carvings into
your toere can be requested if you make available to me a
drawing of your request. All sales of drums are
final with no returns.
It is also important to know of the care that is needed to
go into your new toere and sticks to ensure they last you for
years to come. Knowing that there is a drastic climate
change from the Hawaiian Islands to the Mainland, it is
important to treat your wood for this change. All of the
toere and sticks made of whichever wood described is made
shortly before I receive them. Therefore, the wood is
freshly cut, carved, tuned and now open to all of the
elements. Sun, humidity, dry climate and heat or,
extreme cold.
If you think of a scrape, cut or abrasion on your skin,
depending on how large or open it is will depend on how much
it will hurt. You bleed, then the skin scabs and then
the skin dries. You treat your cuts and scrapes with
ointments and then oil or lotion when your skin dries.
If you think about wood in the same way, you may begin to
understand the effects. When the bark is stripped or cut
away from the toere in the making, that is the skin that
protects the wood and keeps its moisture. It needs care.
Once you start cutting and shaping the outside of the toere,
you are cutting deeper into the wood and exposing more of the
moisture and immediately you are loosing that moisture.
As you cut into the toere to create your sound, now you have
started the drying out process from the inside and the
outside.
In order for your toere to maintain its tone, color and
to keep from cracking and splintering, you need to oil the
toere with an oil that is readily available to you
wherever you are. I use a lemon oil which is available
in any hardware or grocery store. Kukui nut oil is also
very good to use but very expensive. The longer I have
the toeres with me, I treat the drums as needed and you will
just need to maintain what has been started. If you pour
the oil into a container, use a 2-3" wide brush and "paint"
the oil onto the toere surface. All sides and top and
bottom. If you neglect the top and bottom and the
opening of the toere, that is a probable beginning area for
the cracks to start. It sounds like a lot of work but it
is not. I have personal toeres and sticks that I have
been using for years and no cracks, splits and no broken
sticks! Toeres are usually an investment for most.
So with that said, take care of them and you will have them to
use and enjoy for years to come.
As usual, you can contact me with any questions that you
might have via e-mail or telephone listed on the Contact/Links
page. I hope you enjoy this new addition!
Aloha!
To best hear the tones of the toere, use your exterior
speakers on your computer or the use of headphones, which
enhance the sound.

NEW HANDMADE
PAHU ~ MAY, 2007
Shown below is a pahu of solid wood, that was hollowed by
hand. This is not rolled wood (not that rolled wood for
pahu is not good, it is!), it is hand chiseled inside and out
and resonated very well. The drum head skins are of goat
skin, all drummers like this because of the ease of play, and
less stress on the hand and wrist. The sound is clear
and tight, a great value for the workmanship.

IRONWOOD STICKS
The toere sticks I sell are made of Ironwood harvested in
Hawai`i. The color is lighter than the dark brown sticks
you see from Tahiti but, the wood is solid, dense, and you can still
shape it to fit your hand size. These sticks are a basic
cut and like the
toere, still need the oiling to care for them. The sounds
of the toeres above are played with these sticks.
The price for these sticks are:
$65.00 each plus shipping
