Ipu Heke

I was taught the skill of making ipu hekes by Reyn Kauluhaimalama Akiona, a good friend. Reyn taught me all of the skills required to make these gourd drums of the kahiko. There was much to learn about the creation of sound and technique, which is the mark of a good ipu heke. I hand pick each gourd used from mountains of gourds. I check for cracks, thickness, sound, size and shape. Then the process of building the ipu heke begins. The ipu heke is naturally finished with orange oil with beeswax to protect its shell. I truly enjoy making these instruments of Old Hawai'i.
