Home > Ipu Heke > Hula Pahu

The Hula Pahu of Old Hawai`i was hand carved from coconut stumps, then headed with the skin of the Tiger Shark.  The traditional making of the hula pahu takes much time, even in the right weather conditions.  The right weather conditions I speak of are of course in Hawai`i.  The temperature is always above 80 degrees, the sun is always shining (for the most part) to dry the stumps in each stage of chiseling, the ocean always had sharks available for food and then for the use of the skin.  The Hawaiian People never wasted anything and are always looking at methods of "making due" with what the Good Lord provided for us.

Now days, we have to use whatever good hard woods are available to us to make the hula pahu.  Coconut stumps are still used when available, all types of Palm stumps are used, Milo, Koa, Monkey Pod, many other available woods are used in this day and age.  To head the hula pahu, shark skin is just not available in any quantity for purchase or use and considered quite special to have one on your hula pahu.  Today, we use cow hide, elk and deer, goat, almost any skin that will still give the strength to stretch, and make the resounding "ring" when played.

The hula pahu that I am offering are made of available woods too.  Many of these are made of Milo and some of coconut.  The hula pahu will be identified below as of what woods are used as well as the method of making.  There are 2 methods of cutting the hula pahu center for sound.  The one method is to cut and hollow the entire center of the stump as was done in Old Hawai`i.  The other method is to cut a sound chamber in the hula pahu.  This is when you cut out from top to about 2/3 of the way down and stop.  You then invert the hula pahu and start to hollow out from the bottom to where you stopped from the top.  This (in short) will create a chamber where air is captured and the sound resonates in the hula pahu.  As you can see in the photo above, these hula pahu shells are hand carved with hand tools.  The shapes at the base of the hula pahu are not perfect, the body of the hula pahu is not sanded completely smooth, most lines are smooth and straight but still with the slight imperfection of work by hand and tool.  I offer this style of hula pahu to honor the Old Hawai`i tradition of hand made.  Most of the hula pahu are headed with cow hide and some will be headed with shark skin when available.  This will be identified in each description of each hula pahu as they are listed.  I hope you enjoy this selection of hula pahu.
