Collection & Original Makanaaloha Designs
 
 
Shown above is a full size mahiole of Old Hawai`i.
This mahiole is hand woven by my friend Lloyd Kumula`au
Sing of O`ahu, Hawai`i, and I have done all of the feather
work of the mahiole. This feathered mahiole
is woven of rattan in the same method as the Ancient Hawaiians
of our past. The other photos of the un-feathered
mahiole is of another mahiole I am working on now
and is woven out of `ie`ie.
The mahiole of the Ali`i of Old Hawai`i were woven
of `ie`ie rootlets, and this mahiole was woven the same
way as done in generations past. The mahiole is
then covered with netting with the gill size of 1/4" weave,
then stitched in place to the mahiole. The
netting is the same size netting used to make mahiole
by our ancestors.
Feathering of this mahiole is done with dyed goose
feathers. I used the dyed goose feathers because of the
shape of the feather and the strength of the feather quill.
Feathers used on the mahiole of Old Hawai`i were from
the near extinct Honey Creepers, indigenous to Hawai`i.
The nearest comparable feather to these lost birds of Hawai`i
are parrot feathers. The size and shape of the breast
feathers, the strength of the quills, many different parrots
and Macaws would qualify for use. Although it would take
many months of collecting from many parrots as they naturally
molt, these feathers can be used as well. Once the goose
feathers are cut to size, they are then hand tied onto the
netting every 1/8" or every "X" of the netting.
The color combination shown on this mahiole is my
own choice, not copied from any photo or record. I am
continuing to make other mahiole in months to come and
will use other color combinations in the future.
There is little known about any of the mahiole that
are cared for in museums all over the world. The
mahiole in museums are unknown as to who they were made
for, which Ali`i they belong to, and what Chiefs may have worn
them before gifted to travelers from abroad. There are
many historical transcripts that are offered in history books
from journals of Captains and other officers of ships which
document mostly of the masterful feather work of the
Hawaiians, and how they have never seen anything like this in
their travels around the world.

kamoe. I really enjoy making the lei kamoe and trying
different and difficult methods of making these new designs.
I had started over a number of times at the split and ended up
with this beautiful lei design. I was very happy with
this completed lei kamoe and hope that you like this original
design. This lei is displayed in a Koa shadow box which
I made as well. This lei kamoe can be purchased alone or as
shown as a Gallery Collection piece. This is the first
lei kamoe of this style and I will re-make this design in the
same color combination, or you can choose a color combination
you desire.
