This is a presentation of what I call the Ali`i Class.
This is a collection of feather lei hatbands for the person
(s) who wants the best. This selection of lei humu
papa are made with some of the more rare and one of a
kind feathers and truly unique one of a kind selections. You
will also see some of the fine classic feather lei hatbands of
Hawaii made in the traditional and stunning styles.
Pupu Olepe `o
Ni`ihau:
It is written in the book of the Ni`ihau
Shell Leis that the lei olepe humu papa ("flat sewn" hatband) haven't been made since the 1940's. The olepe shell today is very rare. If the shell can be found in Ni`ihau, it rarely appears on the beaches and even then, they are very hard to find.
This presentation of the lei
olepe `o Ni`ihau is made of olepe shells that were
collected on the beaches of Ni`ihau by `ohana members living
on Ni`ihau for many generations. The amount of shells
needed to collect to be able to sort through to get uniformity
to make one lei olepe can take years to gather. These
olepe shells were gathered for over 20 years and I am grateful
and mahalo nui loa to Aunty Ho`onani for her kindness for
this makana.
This lei olepe `o Ni`ihau is made
with olepe shells that are 5/16"-3/8" long and wide.
This lei is sewn onto a tapa cloth base as was done for many
generations. The length of this lei is 26" long (shells)
and to the end of the tapa, 27". The color combination
of the olepe shells are earth tones with white shell breaks in
a slanted pattern. This lei has approximately 575 shells
and over 2,300 stitches.
A certified
Certificate of
Authenticity is available with this lei with an
appraised value greater than the
listed price. This certificate is a
valid document to insure it against loss, fire, or damage.
A Ni`ihau shell lei is the only shell that can be insured for
its replacement value when certified.

Shown here is the Chinese Ringneck Pheasant, small green neck feather
lei hatband. I don't have to tell you how much work was involved in making this
feather lei hatband! It takes feathers from hundreds of pheasants to have enough feathers to make this lei.
This feather lei hatband is sewn onto a felt base 26" long (end to end of the
felt and 25" of feathers) and approximately 1 1/4" wide. This lei hulu has approximately 1,900 feathers and over
9,500 stitches.

Shown here is the Chinese Ringneck
Pheasant, small white neck feather lei lei hatband.
To the best of my knowledge, this is a one of a kind feather
lei hatband. I have never seen in person or read in a
book about a feather lei hatband made with all white neck
feathers of the Ringneck Pheasant. This beautiful
feather lei hatband is
made with white neck feathers sorted from many hundreds of
birds. As always, none of the birds I use are killed for
there feathers. I used so many birds because of the
quantity of unusable white feather there are. Many of
the white neck feathers have black or green tips on them and
markings. The lei is bordered with blue and green neck
feathers along with Valley Quail feathers as well. The
combination is striking and eye catching. This feather lei
hatband is
sewn onto a felt base 26 1/2" long (25 1/2" of feathers) and
is about 1 1/4" wide. It has over 2,250 feathers and
over 11,250 stitches.

Shown here is a feather lei
hatband made of the Elliot's Pheasant
Pheasant. The natural habitat of this pheasant is in
Eastern China. You will find these pheasants in moderate
elevations in mountain or valleys. They are naturally in
thick jungle, heavy vegetation and shrubby areas. This
also makes it difficult to monitor their life in the wild and
counts. This species is currently considered endangered
and is increasingly becoming rare in the wild due to natural
habitat destruction. In China, the Elliot's pheasant is
somewhat common in zoos and seem to do well in the aviaries
around the country. This feather lei hatband is sewn onto a felt
base measuring 26" long (25" of feathers) and approximately 1
1/2" wide. This feather lei hatband has hundreds of feathers and
thousands of stitches. This is a one of a kind lei humu
papa.

Impeyan Pheasant (also known as the Himalayan Monal), and

beautiful pheasants of the world. It displays it's metallic
colors of green, Bronze, blue, purple and more. You can see
for yourself! This feather lei hatband is also accented
with feathers of a Ruby Macaw, Military Macaw, Golden
Pheasant, and the Indian Peacock.
This pheasant is considered stable in it's natural habitat but
very rare in this form. This is currently a one of a kind
feather lei hatband. This feather lei hatband is sewn onto a felt
base measuring 26" from end to end (25" of feathers) and
approximately 2" wide. With hundreds of feathers and
thousands of stitches, the feather patterns and colors are
stunning.
